Five years after the world premiere of the concept car ID. BUZZ at the Detroit auto show in January 2017, the time has come: The production version called ID. Buzz is done. Volkswagen is therefore activating the countdown to a double world premiere: On March 9, the fully electric Bulli will be presented at the same time as the ID. Buzz (five seater) and ID. Buzz Cargo (transporter) get off to a zero-emissions start.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is currently in the final test phase of the ID. Buzz prototypes. The pre-series fleet is currently touring through Europe. The ID Buzz prototypes are only slightly camouflaged. Despite the striking rainbow pattern, it is clear that the designers have consistently transferred the styling of the 2017 concept car to the 2022 production version – the similarities are unmistakable. VW is not yet revealing the cockpit, but just think of the ID.3 and ID.4.

Both IDs Buzz versions also pick up on the style elements of the legendary T1 – the original Bulli. These include extremely short body overhangs, maximum use of space in a minimal traffic area, the classic division of the body design into a lower and upper level and the unmistakable face with its V-shape. And just like the original Bulli, the ID. Buzz about a rear wheel drive.
Technically, the new series is based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) from the Volkswagen Group. Both IDs Buzz versions will start in 2022 with a lithium-ion high-voltage battery that offers a gross energy content of 82 kWh (net: 77 kWh). The battery supplies a 150 kW electric motor, which is integrated into the rear axle and also drives it. The top speed is electronically limited to 145 km/h.

Official range values are not yet available. On the one hand, the e-machine builds up its maximum torque of 310 Nm from a standing start. On the other hand, this dynamic component is accompanied by a very low body center of gravity, since the battery is located far down in the sandwich floor. Due to its design, the ID. Buzz has another advantage: The turning circle of the electric Bulli is just over 11.0 meters.
Based on the MEB, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has developed a versatile structure that enables a particularly wide range of uses: For the ID. Buzz, with its five seats, is joined by the three-seater ID. Buzz Cargo. But even that is just the beginning. In the course of the coming year, for example, an extended wheelbase with correspondingly expanded interior options will enrich the range.
Regarding the dimensions: The versions of the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo with standard wheelbase (2,988 mm) is 4,712 mm short. For comparison: the wheelbase of the new ID. Except for two millimeters difference, Buzz corresponds to that of the T6.1, which, however, measures 4,904 mm in total length. The ID. Buzz has a similar interior length but can use smaller parking spaces.
The generously glazed bus is 1,937 mm high; in the case of the Transporter, it is 1,938 mm (T6.1: 1,970 mm) due to slight chassis differences. The two ID. Buzz 1,985 mm (without exterior mirrors); this makes the new model 81 mm wider than the T6.1. With rims in the dimensions 18 to 21 inches, the new series rolls on large wheels (750 mm diameter).
The five-seater ID. Even with all passengers on board, Buzz can carry up to 1,121 liters of luggage. The maximum storage volume of the ID, which is equipped with a partition behind the first row of seats. Buzz Cargo is over 3.9 cubic feet.
The series will be equipped with the latest ID. Software will also offer the “Plug & Charge” function in the future. The ID authenticates itself. Buzz via charging plug at the fast charging stations (DC/direct current) of many providers and thus exchanges all necessary data with the charging point.
And there will be another new feature: bi-directional loading. This technology opens up a completely new spectrum of possibilities. An example: from now on it will be possible to store excess energy from the in-house photovoltaic system in the ID. Buzz and feed it back into the house in the evening to be self-sufficient even when there is no sun.
In general, the following applies to the ID. Buzz just like for all models of the ID. Family: Software updates can be brought on board over-the-air. This includes updates to the infotainment system as well as updates in the area of charging or driver assistance.
Shortly after the start of production of the ID. Buzz in the first half of the year, the European market launch is scheduled for autumn. The ID Buzz will also be launched in the US.
