L’Alfa Romeo Tonale has been talked about a lot, since the presentation of the concept to its official presentation a few days ago. The SUV will play an important role in the brand’s range over the next few years and, like so many other Alfa Romeo models that have come before it, it could be adopted by the police.
Of course, there are no official indications of a Tonale “in uniform” yet, but we tried to imagine it with a rendered special exclusive in livery Carabinieri.
The uniform suits him
The starting point was the Giulia, which is already used in street patrols. Just like the sedan and the Julietit is not excluded that the Tonale will also be enlisted in the future.
In our graphic reconstruction, the new Italian SUV is equipped with all the equipment typical of the Carabinieri, starting with the classic dark blue color with red stripes on the sides and the bonnet and the symbol of the Nucleo Operativo Radiomobile. The modifications continue with the flashing lights and the adjustable headlight on the roof, the flashing lights in the mirrors and the variable message rear panel.

Like the other Carabinieri cars, the Tonale should also be equipped with a windscreen, armored windows and doors (level B4), protection of the gas tank, a detention cell for one person , a central radio and an amplification and broadcasting system outside the car.
The most recent copies of the Giulia came with a 200 hp 2.0 turbo and an 8-speed automatic transmission. the motor of the Tonale that comes closest to these numbers is theHybrid VGTa mild-hybrid unit, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which delivers 160 hp and 240 Nm of torque.
The Carabinieri could, however, opt for an even more powerful and greener version. This is the version plug-in hybrid Q4 with all-wheel drive and a total power of 275 ch. The combination of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor allows a 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and an electric range of up to 80 km in urban use.
And it wouldn’t be the Carabinieri’s first hybrid: the first Jeep Renegade 4xe plug-in hybrids have been on the road for several months.
How police cars are “enlisted”
In some cases, brands provide cars in readywhile in others they have to go through the procedure oftender. For example, in the specific section of the Carabinieri website, all completed or ongoing tenders are transparently listed.
Manufacturers express their interest by submitting an offer, which may also include a nationwide full service proposal for a number of years or kilometers. Before entering service, the cars are modified by specialized workshops.
The relationship between Alfa Romeo and law enforcement goes back to 1951when the 1900 M “Matta” all-terrain vehicle started the long tradition of the “Gazelle”.
