In the category for road safety awards the total participations in 2021 were 12 Municipalities, of which three were Greek.
THE Hellas for another year is at the top of the European countries participating in the campaign for European Mobility Week by Municipality of Alimos and the Municipality of Rethymno to stand out.
With the announcement of the European Commission highlights the 12 European cities -among the total 3.184- who managed to find themselves in finalist Municipalities for European Mobility Week 2021 on “We are Healthy and Safe with the Sustainable Mobility».
The cities Amadora, Kassel and Lulenburgaz compete in the category of municipalities with a population of over 100,000 inhabitantswhile ο Άλιμος is a finalist in the category of smaller municipalitiesalong with the cities Miahadas and Walloon.
Both awards are given in recognition of important initiatives for more ecological and safe cities. The finalists for Sustainable Urban Mobility Design Award is Madrid, the South Mitrovica and Tampere. THE Florence, the Rethimno and the Warsaw compete for her prize EU for Road Safety cities, which recognizes exceptional measures road safety.
THE Transport Commissioner Antina Valean said: “Congratulations to finalist pioneering and showing how cities and towns across Europe can improve their quality of life by focusing on more clean, ecological and easy options transport for all. We support this transition with its new framework EU for urban mobilitywhich provides European guidelines for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of coal and of pollutants and to improve it mobility in the cities.”
Her campaign European Mobility Week lasts from 16 to 22 September each year. Last year the participation broke every record, as they participated in the campaign over 3,100 cities and towns from 53 countries. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 28 at 16.00 (Greek time).
Greece is first in participations in cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants
In European Mobility Week 2021 the Hellas noted a very dynamic presence as they participated in the campaign 90 citiesthat is, the 1/4 of Greek Municipalities.
Our country emerged first in participations in the category small towns (below 100,000 inhabitants) and in the finalists of the specific category, the Municipality of Alimos along with the city Miajadas of Spain and the city Valongo of Portugal.
THE Municipality of AlimosAccording to EU, impressed the judges for the comprehensive action plan where it highlighted the interaction of citizens and local associations during the European Mobility Week (September 16 – 22), including an interactive theatrical interpretation of the “history of the bicycle” and the conversion of public transport stations into entertainment venues.
In the category for road safety awards (urban road safety awards) the total participations in 2021 it was 12of which 3 Greek (Chania, Rethymno, Kos). THE Municipality of Rethymno who emerged in 3 finaliststogether with Florence of Italy and Warsaw, Polandimpressed the judges for the balance of mobility achieved by the city both as a major tourist destination and as Municipality which best serves the needs of the residents of the area, with the design and implementation of projects that improve accessibility and reduce car accidents focusing on “active mobility” (pedestrian and bicycle) and improving public transport.
It is noted that in the category for awards Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (ΣΒΑΚ), the eponymous SUMP awardsin total 7 European participations The Greek participation of their city also stood out Ioannina.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy supports every year European Mobility Week (European Mobility Week – EMW) which since 2002 has been established as the most important EU institution for its promotion Sustainable Urban Development. The campaign is part of the pan-European goal of achieving climate neutrality and supports every local initiative to make cities safer, greener, more participatory and accessible to all.
The topic of European Mobility Week 2021: “We are Healthy and Safe with the Sustainable MobilityProposes as central issues the mental & physical healthsafety and tackling its pandemic COVID-19. The aim is to draw a very basic conclusion from pandemic of coronavirus, that as the gentle ways increase movement, the more attractive to citizens and friendly to environment become cities.
The selected cities were selected by an independent team of experts in mobility and transport and the four winners will be crowned during an online awards ceremony on March 28, 2022.
