The Fiat Ducato achieved the best result among commercial vehicles in the 2022 Euro NCAP safety tests and is the first in the segment to be awarded a platinum medal.
To find out which are the best and worst commercial vehicles available on the European market, the Euro NCAP tested 19 models, with the aim of evaluating accident prevention systems, as well as their behavior.
Euro NCAP considers that there is a slow but progressive evolution in this area, as some models are better equipped than in the previous year, with systems that work better.
Last year, this European road safety organization warned of the low number of safety devices in commercial vehicles, noting that as they are work vehicles, many distribution operators and small business owners spend a lot of time on the roads. Given their weight and dimensions, they represent a high risk for smaller vehicles and for the most vulnerable road users in the event of an accident.
Five stars for Volkswagen Caddy in Euro NCAP tests
The new legislation will force manufacturers to introduce many of the driver assistance systems that are already available in passenger cars. In the meantime, Euro NCAP publishes light commercial ratings to encourage brands to more quickly include advanced systems.
Just a “Not Recommended”
In the 2022 ranking, only one vehicle received the “Not recommended” mention against five in 2021. While the Fiat Talento was discontinued, the Opel Movano is now built on the Stellantis platform and receives the bronze medal.
The Renault Master also won the bronze medal, thanks to small but considerable improvements to the speed assistance and lane keeping systems. Its twin, Nissan Interstar (formerly NV400) has also received these improvements, but it still lacks the autonomous emergency braking system and thus remains in the “Not Recommended” category.
Renault Trafic has been revised and its safety has improved considerably since the last test. Now it has a robust autonomous emergency braking system, which earned it the silver medal.
The new Fiat Ducato was, however, the big winner of the 2022 edition, thanks to advanced sensors that detect pedestrians and cyclists, exceeding current standards. The 88% rating put him in a prominent position against the competition and he became the first commercial to win the platinum medal.
Regrettably, the other Stellantis vehicles with the same platform – Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Jumper and Opel Movano – have yet to receive the same safety update and have not received the same distinction as the Fiat Ducato.
