Italians are known for their amazing cuisine. And at Maserati, too, a dish is simmering: The Grecale, the brand’s SUV located below the Levante. The model was to be officially presented by the end of 2021, but the premiere was postponed to 2022 due to the lack of chips. Now we know the date: on March 22nd the covers will fall.
However: The Grecale doesn’t actually hide an awful lot of secrets anymore. There have already been many Erlkönigs and teaser images, and our Italian colleagues have already been able to drive a prototype. And the pictures of the Grecale that came with the announcement of the premiere reveal more than they hide.
Driven by the Maserati family, this fleet of vehicles now travels in light camouflage. A series of information on it already gives a first view of the technical data of the Grecale. The central message on the vehicle reads: “I’m the Maserati Grecale. I can’t tell you much more just yet.”
Especially in the side profile, the viewer sees a pleasing design mix: in the front something Alfa Giulietta and the next Maserati GranTurismo, on the side something Levante and Jaguar F-Pace and in the back … well … a touch of Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai. To put it in culinary terms: Spaghetti Bolognese. Not terribly innovative, but tastes good to the majority.
What is known about the ingredients of Grecale? The basis is provided by the Giorgio platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Stelvio. In terms of dimensions, the Grecale should be based roughly on the Porsche Macan. What has changed in particular is the wheelbase of 2.90 meters, 8 centimeters longer than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. However, at 4.85 meters, the Grecale is also significantly longer (15 cm) than the Alfa. There is more space for the rear passengers and the trunk, also with a view to the specific needs of customers in markets such as China and the USA.
Among other things, a four-cylinder with 48V mild hybrid system is used under the hood in the entry-level version of the Grecale. Four-cylinder … fans will be reminded of the notorious Biturbo. But the Ghibli has also had a mild hybrid four-cylinder with an electric compressor since summer 2020, as has the Levante. Power there: 243 kW (330 hp).
Another option is probably the biturbo with 510 hp from the Stelvio Q for the top model. We also know that an all-electric Grecale is also in the works and will come after the introduction of combustion engines.
