The new Toyota Sequoia will hit the US market in 2022 as a 2023 model, replacing the aging second generation of the three-row SUV. Toyota takes this opportunity to revise the large vehicle both technically and visually. The big changes are important as the Sequoia is now the brand’s top SUV following the discontinuation of the Land Cruiser in the United States.
The benefits of a new engine and a new platform
All versions of the new Sequoia come with the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid that Toyota calls the i-Force Max. The engine delivers 443 hp and develops a torque of 790 Newton meters – like in the tundra. The only transmission is a 10-speed automatic.
There is no information on fuel consumption yet. But Toyota claims the numbers are “a huge improvement over the previous generation“. The previous generation figures were 18.1 l/100km in the city, 13.8 l/100km on the highway and 15.7 l/100km in the US combined consumption cycle for the 4×2 powertrain.
The new model is based on the same modular body-on-frame platform as the current Tundra, Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 600. There is a choice of two-wheel drive or an optional part-time four-wheel drive on all trim levels. The TRD Pro package, on the other hand, is only available with all-wheel drive.
The chassis consists of an independent wheel suspension at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. Adaptive dampers and an air suspension system for the rear axle are also available as options.
The new Sequoia can tow up to 9,000 pounds (equivalent to 4,082 kg). Almost 22 percent more than the previous generation. The optional electrically folding and unfolding trailer mirrors provide a better view when towing loads. In addition, the panoramic monitor offers a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings when manoeuvring.
what does he look like
The exterior design speaks a straightforward language that makes the Sequoia look robust. The front end is similar to that of the current Tundra. There is a large grille, but the designers have given the different trim levels different grille designs to differentiate their styling. For example, the TRD Pro package has wide black hexagons, the Capstone package has smaller openings with a chrome finish. The headlights are each Y-shaped.
The fenders appear muscular with a prominent ridge above the wheel opening. The base of the D-pillar is angled forward, and the rear window partially merges into the body side.
Inside, all Sequoias have three rows of seats. Depending on the equipment variant, the second row has either a bench seat or free-standing individual armchairs. The third row of seats slides 6 centimeters fore and aft and has a shelving system in the back to make it easier to stack luggage in the back.
Choose your equipment variant
The Sequoia is available in five trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro and Capstone. All are equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite, heated seats, a sunroof, 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a panoramic camera system.
While the SR5 trim features an 8.0-inch infotainment display, the SR5 Premium increases the display to 14.0-inches. The premium-added model also features power-folding third-row seats, a hands-free tailgate, and 120-volt power outlets in the cabin and cargo area.
Both SR5 models can be combined with the TRD Sport package. It includes Bilstein shock absorbers and revised spring tuning. These SUVs then also drive on matt black 20-inch wheels instead of the usual 18-inch ones.
The Limited version adds heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and sun visors for the second and third row of seats to the SR5 Premium.
All-wheel drive versions of the SR5 and Limited are available with the TRD Off-Road package. This includes a lockable rear axle differential, 18-inch wheels, the Multi-Terrain-Select system, a hill descent control and a creeper control. There are also Bilstein shock absorbers and revised springs.
The Platinum upgrades the Limited with heated and ventilated second-row seats, a 14-speaker stereo, panoramic roof, head-up display, wireless charging and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The headlights and taillights also have LED lighting.
The TRD Pro is the trim level for people who really want to go off-road. It features Fox shocks with internal bypass and a .25″ front skid plate. There is also a lockable rear axle differential, multi-terrain select, crawl control and downhill assist control. An LED light bar is part of the grille and there is a luggage rack on the roof. Black 18-inch wheels have a larger offset for a wider stance. Dual tailpipes are also part of the package. The exterior color Solar Octane is exclusive to this model.
Finally, there is the top version Capstone. Here, luxury is more important. It features chrome accents and electric running boards. The SUV rolls on 22-inch wheels with a chrome finish. Inside, the semi-aniline leather interior comes in a black and white color scheme. The interior is clad in open-pore walnut. Acoustic glass in the front doors and additional soundproofing make this model quieter for passengers than other Sequoia models. Pricing will be announced shortly before launch.
