In 2021, vehicle production in Portugal increased by 9.7% compared to the previous year, but remains below the levels recorded in 2019.
The semiconductor crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic continue to be felt in the volumes of car production in Portugal. Despite the evolution from 2020 to 2021, the sector recorded a drop in production of 16.1% compared to 2019. Even so, last December 23,891 vehicles were produced, that is, an increase of 78.7% compared to the same period last year. Adding the accumulated volumes of 2021, 289,954 cars were manufactured in Portugal, 9.7% more than in the previous year.
The statistics presented reveal a positive impact of national car production in 2021 on the Portuguese economy, as 97.4% of vehicles are destined for export. The main destinations are European, in which Germany occupies the first place in the ranking with 18.2% of purchases of exported cars, followed by France (14.8%), Spain (12.8%) and Italy (11 .6%).
In a detailed analysis of national car production in 2021, in heavy vehicles the numbers are less positive, and there is a decrease of 69.8% in assembly compared to the previous year. In December 2021, only 8 heavy vehicles were manufactured, thus representing a drop of 75% compared to December 2020, in line with the figures obtained throughout the year.
